The Asociación Fronteras Amazónicas – AFRONTA joined a community patrol led by the Río La Novia Borderless Forest Management Association (MABOSINFRON), in the province of Purús, Ucayali region, to reinforce territorial surveillance in one of the most biodiverse and vulnerable areas of the Peruvian Amazon. The activity is part of joint efforts to protect more than 6,700 hectares of primary forest under community management.
During the patrol, the team covered strategic sectors of the La Novia river basin, where community monitors carry out ongoing surveillance to prevent threats such as illegal logging. The patrol made it possible to check the state of conservation of the forest, identify critical points and reinforce territorial control in hard-to-reach areas where the presence of the State is limited.
Sally Plaza took part on behalf of AFRONTA and highlighted the importance of working jointly with local organizations. "This work strengthens what communities are already doing to defend their territory. Our support aims to provide technical tools so that surveillance is more effective and sustainable," she said.
For his part, the president of Mabosinfron, Amancio Flores, reaffirmed the communities' commitment to protecting their resources. "We live here and we are the first to care for our forests. The patrols help us detect any threat in time and act immediately against illegal activities," he said.
The surveillance model promoted by MABOSINFRON combines ancestral knowledge with technical practices such as incident recording, route monitoring and access control. This approach has reduced pressure on forest resources in its area of work, consolidating a community monitoring system that contributes to biodiversity conservation.
Through this support, AFRONTA reaffirms its commitment to strengthening local capacities and promoting sustainable territorial management strategies, recognizing the fundamental role of Indigenous communities in protecting Amazonian forests against threats to their livelihoods and to environmental balance.
