AFRONTA supports Indigenous communities of Yurúa in a meeting with SERNANP to advance Private Conservation Areas

The Asociación Fronteras Amazónicas – AFRONTA provided technical assistance during a working meeting in Lima that strengthened the process of creating Private Conservation Areas promoted by the native communities of Sawawo Hito 40 and Nueva Bella.

Representatives of the native communities of Sawawo Hito 40 and Nueva Bella, accompanied by AFRONTA's technical team, held a working meeting with officials from the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP) to follow up on the process of creating Private Conservation Areas (ACP) in the district of Yurúa, Ucayali region. The meeting made it possible to review progress on the case files and to coordinate action aimed at strengthening this conservation initiative driven by Indigenous peoples themselves.

As part of the process, AFRONTA provides ongoing technical support to the communities by preparing and strengthening the case files, coordinating with the competent authorities and following up on each stage of the procedure. Carlos Torres, technical specialist at AFRONTA, highlighted that joint work with the communities and SERNANP seeks to ensure that conservation proposals led by Indigenous peoples continue to move forward in line with the established requirements.

Private Conservation Areas are a mechanism that allows ecosystems of high environmental value to be conserved under the management of their owners, strengthening the protection of biodiversity and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. In the case of Yurúa, these initiatives also represent an opportunity to reinforce Indigenous territorial governance and to contribute to conserving one of the best preserved areas of the Peruvian Amazon.
